This calm, beautifully finished bathroom in Newlyn showcases how bespoke stone craftsmanship can transform a functional vanity area into one of the defining features of a room. Manufactured and installed by Duke Stone of Cornwall, the bespoke vanity uses 20mm Coastal Gillan Quartz in a Matte Silk finish, creating a soft, elegant surface that complements the warm timber cabinetry and brushed brass fittings.
The brief was to create a refined bathroom vanity that felt simple, practical and quietly luxurious. Rather than treating the stone as a small surface detail, Duke Stone fabricated the quartz to form both the vanity top and an integrated back panel, allowing the installation to accommodate wall mounted taps while maintaining clean architectural lines.

This Newlyn bathroom was designed around a calm, minimal aesthetic, with natural light, warm cabinetry and soft stone tones working together to create a relaxing space. Coastal Gillan Quartz was chosen for its gentle movement, durable performance and subtle Matte Silk finish.
For this project, Duke Stone fabricated and installed a bespoke quartz vanity surface with mitred detailing and an integrated quartz back panel. The finished installation provides a practical surface for everyday bathroom use while giving the room a more refined, considered appearance.
Material: Coastal Gillan Quartz
Thickness: 20mm, mitred for a solid edge appearance
Finish: Matte Silk
Application: Bespoke bathroom vanity and integrated back panel
Coastal Gillan Quartz offers a soft, neutral appearance that works especially well in bathrooms where a calm and understated finish is required. Its subtle tonal movement provides visual interest without overpowering the room, making it ideal for spaces that combine natural materials, warm timber and soft lighting.
Quartz is also a practical choice for bathroom surfaces. It is durable, non porous and easy to maintain, making it well suited to vanity areas where the surface needs to cope with daily use, water, cosmetics and cleaning.

The vanity surface was fabricated to sit cleanly above the bespoke timber cabinetry, giving the room a precise and well balanced finish. The quartz adds a sense of permanence and quality while remaining soft enough in tone to suit the relaxed bathroom setting.
The Matte Silk finish diffuses natural light from the roof windows, helping the surface feel calm and tactile rather than overly reflective. This makes the stone an important part of the atmosphere of the room as well as a practical working surface.

The basin area required accurate templating and careful fabrication to ensure the quartz fitted precisely around the sanitaryware and cabinetry. In a bathroom vanity, these details have a major impact on the final appearance because the eye is naturally drawn to the basin, taps and surrounding surface.
Duke Stone’s fabrication work ensured the quartz remained the main visual feature while supporting the functional requirements of the room. The result is a clean, elegant basin area that feels integrated rather than assembled from separate parts.

Although the bathroom appears beautifully simple, the project required a thoughtful fabrication solution. The wall construction did not allow sufficient depth for the wall mounted taps to sit correctly behind the basin.
Rather than compromise the design, Duke Stone created a precision mitred quartz back panel. This boxed the rear section of the vanity surface, allowing the taps and plumbing to be accommodated neatly while preserving the clean lines of the design.

The vanity and back panel were fabricated using precision mitred joints to create the appearance of a more substantial solid piece of stone. This technique allows a 20mm quartz surface to achieve a thicker, more architectural look while remaining efficient and practical to install.
Mitred detailing requires accuracy in both fabrication and installation. When completed correctly, the joins appear clean and intentional, allowing the stone to read as one continuous element across the vanity area.
The completed vanity brings together several important design qualities: durability, simplicity, craftsmanship and material warmth. The quartz surface is subtle enough to support the wider bathroom design, yet refined enough to become a key feature within the space.

The finished bathroom feels calm, practical and highly considered. By using bespoke quartz fabrication to solve both visual and technical challenges, Duke Stone created a vanity installation that elevates the room without making the design feel complicated.
Bathrooms often require a different level of detailing from kitchen worktop projects. Surfaces need to work around basins, taps, cabinetry, plumbing and wall finishes, often within smaller and more detailed spaces.

Yes. Quartz is an excellent choice for bathroom vanity surfaces because it is durable, non porous and easy to maintain. It performs well in rooms where surfaces are exposed to water, cosmetics and daily use.
No. Engineered quartz does not require sealing, unlike some natural stones. Its non porous structure helps resist water absorption and staining, making it especially practical for bathroom environments.
Quartz vanity surfaces are often fabricated in 20mm thickness, as shown in this Newlyn project. Mitred edges can also be used to create the appearance of a thicker, more solid stone feature.
Yes. Wall mounted taps can be used with quartz vanity surfaces. In some projects, a mitred quartz back panel can be fabricated to accommodate the taps and plumbing while keeping the finished design clean and seamless.
A mitred quartz panel is created by joining stone at a precise angle so the edges appear as one continuous piece. This technique is often used for back panels, boxed sections and thicker edge details.
Yes. Every Duke Stone project is templated and fabricated specifically for the space, allowing quartz surfaces to fit precisely with bespoke cabinetry, basins, taps and surrounding architectural details.
